Directors Biography Jiang Wen, born 1963, is a Chinese film actor and director. Jiang wrote and directed his first film in 1994, 'In the Heat of the Sun'. A tale set in the Cultural Revolution, it won for its young lead actor Xia Yu the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival and garnered six Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. Jiang's second feature, 'Devils on the Doorstep' won him the Grand Prix in the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. He is also well known as an actor.
Mira Nair, born 1957, is an Indian film director and producer based in New York. Her debut feature film, 'Salaam Bombay!' (1988), won the Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival and also earned the nomination for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She often works with longtime creative collaborator, screenwriter Sooni Taraporevala, whom she met at Harvard. Her 2001 film 'Monsoon Wedding' won Golden Lion award and received a Golden Globe Award nomination. Her latest project is Maisha, a film lab to help East Africans and South Asians learn to make films.
Shunji Iwai, born 1963 in Sendai, Japan, is a Japanese film director and video artist, writer and documentarian. Iwai attended Yokohama National University, graduating in 1987. In 1988 he started out in the Japanese entertainment industry by directing TV dramas and music videos. Then, in 1993, his TV drama, 'Fireworks', brought him critical praise and an award from the Japanese Director's As sociation. In 1995 he went on to start his career in feature films, starting with the box-office hit 'Love Letter'. In 1996 came the commercial and critical success 'Swallowtail Butterfly'. In 2004 Iwai released 'Hana & Alice', his first comedy.

Fatih Akın, born 1973 in Hamburg, Germany, is a German film director. He made his debut as director of a full length film as early as 1998 with 'Short Sharp Shock', which brought him the Bronze Leopard at Locarno Film Festival. Since then he has directed feature films such as 'In July' in 2000, 'We forgot to go back' in 2001 and 'Solino' in 2002. 'Head-On' with Sibel Kekilli as the leading actress received Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival and the Best Film and the Audience Award at the 2004 European Film Awards. In 2005 he directed a documentary about the Istanbul music scene, 'Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul', which includes musicians from Ceza to Sezen Aksu to Aynur Doğan and Brenna MacCrimmon. In 2007, Akin's 'The Edge of Heaven' won the prize for best screenplay at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007. On October 24, 2007, the same film was awarded the first edition of the LUX prize for European cinema by the European Parliament.'Soul Kitchen' (2009) won Special Jury Prize and Young Cinema Award for Best Film at 2009 Venice Film Festival.
Joshua Marston, born August 1968, is an American screenwriter and film director best known for the film 'Maria Full of Grace'. Marston worked in Paris as an intern for Life, then for ABC News during the Gulf War. He returned to the United States and earned a master's degree in Political science from University of Chicago in 1994 before earning a Master of Fine Arts in film at New York University. Marston also directed an episode of Six Feet Under.
