MEDIA – PRESENTATION ON FILM FESTIVALS

The presentation shall be organized by the MEDIA desk Croatia in cooperation with Zagreb Film Festival. As a guest lecturer Ms. Marijke de Valck, assistant professor in the department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam and the author of Film Festivals: From European Geopolitics to Global Cinephilia (2007)shall be invited.

Film festivals are in a period of transition and turmoil. New distribution opportunities challenge festivals’ programming practices, industry shifts encourage closer cooperation between industry professionals and festival organizers and the trend towards an increasingly participatory culture is redefining audience engagement with cinema. In this talk Marijke de Valck, assistant professor in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam and expert on film festivals, will put the current transformations in a cultural historical perspective. Looking at the origins of film festivals, their dynamic development and key characteristics she will explain why film festivals have been so successful.

Marijke de Valck is assistant professor in the department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. She is the author of Film Festivals: From European Geopolitics to Global Cinephilia (2007), the first comprehensive publication on film festivals. With case studies on Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Rotterdam Film Festivals retraces the development of a phenomenon that began in the midst of geopolitical disputes in war-torn Europe and showed how festivals nevertheless developed into a successful global network that addresses issues as diverse as programming and value addition, national legitimization, city marketing, glamour, business and cinephilia. Together with Skadi Loist, Marijke founded the Film Festival Research Network (FFRN), a lose connection of scholars working on issues related to film festivals. The FFRN aims to make festival research more available and connect diverse aspects and interdisciplinary exchange between researchers.
