PREMISES

The Student Centre has earned its cult status by organizing cultural projects. From the very beginnings, SC has been the advocate of urban, alternative and experimental scene in Zagreb.

The Student Centre of the 1960's and 1970's became a very important cultural site not only for students but for the whole cultural, artistic and urban scene of Zagreb and Croatia. At that time leaders of the cultural life initiated within SC Teatar &TD (Vjeran Zuppa, design Mihalo Arsovski), SC Gallery (Želimir Košèeviæ, Vladimir Gudac), Music hall (Nikša Gligo), MM centre (Ivan Ladislav Galeta), SC Cinema, etc. SC was the host of significant manifestations such as Festival of Animated Films and Music Biennale, and the tenants of SC, which used its audience, premises and infrastructure, were also Student Experimental Theater (SEK), Polet, Student Journal, Gordogan, Kugla glumište, Youth Radio 101...
SC Club, at the time concert hall, was the place where the Croatian new wave scene emerged.
In the last years SC has been gradually revitalized. The cultural program has initiated many new projects among which are the cooperation with Days of Croatian Film, Film Centre, First International Festival of Debutant Film, Alternative Film Academy, Zagreb Film Festival etc.

Today the concept of culture in SC is defined both formally and essentially as the Culture of Change following thus the very essence of the Student Centre, which is student cultural and social centre characterized by constant flow of generations and their interests.

SC Cinema

SC CINEMA YESTERDAY
In the big family of the University of Zagreb and after the founding of the Student Centre the first established cultural activity were cinema projections in a redone and at the time rented pavilion of the Zagreb Fair.
SC Cinema, already known by that name, began its regular activity in 1959. During this long history there have been unforgettable films and film premiers, best films, films which were on the program the longest (Sound of Music - 100 days!), the most visited and the best remembered matinees (first interactive cinema - guitars, cheering, commentaries and the like, active contributions to a film), first guitar fests, famous names, Zagreb Festival (today Zagrebfest), rock concerts for anthologies, famous discussions - student political and other gatherings...
It must be mentioned a couple of huge manifestations - World Festival of Animated Film and Days of Croatian film.
During the last six years SC Cinema has seen more than 100 000 high school students, who are now freshmen, sophomores or graduates, looking for the most detailed information for their future academic status at the days of University of Zagreb.

Along with regular film screenings SC Cinema puts effort in revitalizing concert activities through programs of high cultural value such as dance events, counseling, seminars, fashion shows, exhibitions, some world rock attractions (the Stranglers) and the like.

SC Gallery
The Student Centre Gallery was founded in 1962. In the 1970's its director Željko Košèeviæ presented there conceptual art and the most prominent world designers like Bruno Munari, Josef Mueller Brockman, Wim Crouwel and others. In that period SC Gallery promoted some of the best Croatian conceptual artist such as Goran Trbuljak and Boris Buèan, whose posters formed the Student Centre visual identity.

In its program the Gallery is oriented toward the youngest and middle generation of artists and public. Many acclaimed young artists began their career here, such as Marijan Crtaliæ, Toni Meštroviæ, Iva Matija Bitanga, Kata Mijatoviæ and others. The exhibitions cover paintings, sculptures, graphics, collages, assemblage, objects, ambient, installations, events, performances, multimedia projects etc.

In 2000 was founded the Gallery of Applied Arts as a certain addition to the program of SC Gallery. AA Gallery is a space for exhibiting works of photographers, comics drawers, illustrators, designers and fashion designers. It is located in the redone lobby of SC Cinema. AA Gallery hosted International Festival of Comics, Salon of Young Artists, final exhibitions of the Faculty of Textile Technology and Faculty of Design.

Along with the regular exhibitions of works selected by the Gallery Board, the program of SC Gallery in 2004 and 2005 has been enriched by concerts.

SC Club

SC Club earned its cult status in the 1980's and at the beginning of the 1990's known under the colloquial expression "Disco". At the time, the Club was a concert hall where emerged and developed new wave scene. There were organized legendary concerts of the bands Azra, Film and others. At the beginning of the 1990's together with the music hall Pauk, the Club promoted younger bands - Idijoti, Majke, Hladno pivo and others.

On the premises of SC Club there is a cyber cafe where students may use computers and internet for free.

MM Centre
MM centre was founded in 1976 with the purpose of "promoting avant-garde experimental film and art television, multimedia artistic presentations". During the 1980's MM Centre of SC undertook activities named "interventions in everyday events", which were meant to encourage contemplation of the environment of living.
Among others: Photo - competition on the subject of abandoned motor vehicles in the city area - stressing ecological destabilization. The action of removing "Forgotten locomotive" by avant-garde theater performance of the group "Kugla-glumište" with the purpose of pointing to the issue of urban units. The action "Cinema for balconies" in Novi Zagreb, the possibility of additional activities of characteristic public buildings (unusual film screening and multimedia presentations in the art pavilion in Zrinjevac park used by that time for concerts of brass bands), entertaining temporary city dwellers (unusual film screenings in the second class waiting room at the Main train station, titled "Train in film", using public spaces for artistic purposes (writing the logo of MM on the main square, interventions on advertising spaces with jumbos posters - with temporal and special discord and dislocation, artists reactions in shop windows
and passages and the like.

These actions became the label of the MM Centre activities simultaneously with the inner presentations and the distribution of programs of SC and their connectedness with other cultural centers in the country as well as European and world centers for modern art, thanks primarily to foreign cultural institutions and their individual representatives located in Zagreb, Croatian assistants and friends.

Teatar &TD

The openness of&TD was the openness of the time which had still not been defined. Teatar &TD did not belong in any aspect to the Zagreb theater life, our culture was emerging in it." (Vjeran Zuppa)

There are different interpretations of the beginnings of &TD. Histories of Croatian theater mention the year 1966, while the protagonists remember the year 1964 and the play Alarm clock by Vladimir Bulatoviæ Vib, played in the period when the theater still bore the name Chamber stage. The repertoire of the new theater was under great influence of Anglo-Saxon and American literature as well as of existentialism. Teatar &TD was born in the atmosphere of the breakthrough of avant-garde art on socialist scene as a necessary reaction to academism. &TD promoted a new generation of playwrights headed by Antun Šoljan, Ivo Brešan and Slobodan Novak. There were created hit plays like Šoljan's Hill, 1967, Galileo's Resurrection, 1967, Diocletian Palace, 1969, Brešan's The play of Hamlet in the village of Mrduša Donja of the Blatuša county, 1971; Novak's Scents, gold, incense 1974.

Student Experimental Theater (SEK) secured the characteristics of alternative and experimental theater to &TD. SEK emerged as a rebellion against the "literary theatre" or "theatre of words", inspired by the works of Antonin Artaud, epic theatre, American happening and Living Theater.
